Euro2000-Kluivert earns special place in history

By Alan Baldwin

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (Reuters) - Patrick Kluivert earned a special place in European soccer history with four goals in the Netherlands' 6-1 destruction of Yugoslavia in the Euro 2000 quarter-finals on Sunday.

Although the forward admitted afterwards that he only scored three of the goals, European governing body UEFA credited the Barcelona striker as having become the first player to score four goals in a match at the European championship finals.

Kluivert said he did not score the Dutch third in the 51st minute when he and Yugoslav Dejan Govedarica both went for a cross into the goalmouth from Paul Bosvelt at the near post. The ball was deflected into the net.

"Yes, honestly. I have to say the defender touched it before me so really I only scored three goals tonight," the forward said.

The Barcelona striker helped the co-hosts move towards a semifinal with Italy with a goal in 24th minute and another seven minutes before halftime before getting the other two after the interval to bring his tally to 29 in 44 games.

Marc Overmars added the other two strikes in the 78th and 90 minutes before Yugoslavia scored an injury-time consolation goal from Savo Milosevic.

The Dutch performance brought back memories of the sublime form that once made them the envy of Europe.

I've kept telling friends since before EURO 2000's start that the Dutch are gonna scoop the pool in this championship... Of course, the French are favorites but so far, their "credentials" basically rest on their 1998 Mundial performance. Yesterday, the French struggled to get rid of the Spaniards. Meanwhile, the Dutch walk the Euro 2000, no sweat.... playing at home --and remember, Holland already beat France 3-2! Scoring THREE goals against the French is even more impressive than a whitewash against those Yugo twits....
