Sam;
<<re: $3B r+d spending at Fujitsu you wrote: "Somehow I find this hard to believe:">>

I agree that this number seems huge. However, I know that Fujitsu has been spending heavily, including their current expansion in Thailand that was announced to be $ 600M, and their new building in Manila. This isn't R+D however. I don't know how authoritative the press item is. Perhaps they were taking all of Fujitsu's R+D figure which would be reported info in Japan. As to how "market share" is measured in this case, I spoke with the analyst and it is based on a units shipped comparative.

You may recall that about three years ago Fujitsu announced their intention to become a top tier drive vendor. I do not recall the exact announcement but its clear they have not backed away from their target. You may recall that we were all speculating they might be getting weak knees after the comments of one of their U.S. located ex-pat executives hinted that they were examining their desktop presence. That was late 98 as I recall, the days of the apex of bleed rate in the desktop segment. Those comments, made to analyst Gillian Munson and promptly reported by her, were clearly ad hoc. I understand the guy who made the statements is now back in Japan, sort of a Japanese version of banishment to Siberia amongst their ex-patriate management.
Best,
Stitch
