I do recall there was a monster console made by ElectroVoice that contained The Mother Of All Woofers. I believe in the console it actually faced downwards.

Ahh, the days of "Too much bass?? You can't get enough bass."

There was one brand of speaker from England called Wharfields, which were weighted down with maybe fifty pounds of sand in the cabinets, ostensibly to dampen resonance. I think it was actually to keep them from walking across the floor under their own power when you played Heartbreaker.

Reminds me of the time I hotwired the dinko stereo in my room into my Fender Bassman git-tar amplifier and summarily cranked it. Stuff was falling off the shelves downstairs.
