Dear Paul:

JC's PC News website has the stuff on the 6/20 10:00PM news item. Get it here: jc-news.com

I used the numbers on the Moldyn Benchmark 86.02, 102% of a 550MHz Celeron performance. Thus a 1GHz PIII would match up to a 1.5GHz Williamette. Or slower than a 800MHz Classic Athlon. No reported benchmarks on Thunderbird or Duron yet (at least on the Moldyn page).

On the Sledgehammer, They could have done an initial design to estimate what the die sizes would be. Now they are redesigning to add new features as they deem necessary or advantageous. The latest word, from interviews with Ruiz, is that Sledgehammer will be sampling in early H1-2001 at 2GHz. That is about the time needed for production in H2-2001, maybe even late H1-2001. That is also before the rumored production of McKinley (late H2-2001 or 2002).

And Intel is Praying for Williamette, and McKinley. Itanium (Merced) is a lost cause. BTW, the introduced Celeron 700 is looking to be "sucking wind" against the Duron 700, even when overclocked. (http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1264)
