This was at a recent demo at the Taiwan computer show, and I can't find a link. The article I read just said that was the speed of the chip- draw your own conclusions about what that means for the future.

As for SSL- you're absolutely right, this is a specific area where Itanium will shine vs other cpu's . There is though already dedicated server hardware sold for helping with server side encryption. I doubt Itanium will beat its speed.

Does anyone remember intel's 860 chip? It needed a "smart" compiler too!

I haven't a clue - maybe they dreamt up these numbers.
