Jim: WSRN forecasts are incorrect. IP came in over estimates for FY99. But that seems besides the point, and I don't want to belabor this issue and bore the rest of the thread, but the paper industry in general has been much in need of consolidation and IP has moved aggressively in that area, first with its acquisition of Union Camp and more recently with its acquisition of Champion. They paid a high price for Champion (and that accounts for some of the reason IP has sold off), but over the long term this is a major plus for the paper industry as a whole, which is given to binges of production followed by purges in pricing power. Given that IP now has greater pricing and production power within the industry, that would offset the nearterm negative of the cost of Champion, in my view.
But the stock price is not reflecting any of this. That is what concerns me and leads me to worry about economic growth down the road. (By the way, I don't buy the Wall Street Journal argument that the street only values information now and no one cares about commodities. The New Economy has led not to the paperless office, but the paper-clogged office.) M2

James, VCR rose above the 13 moving average yesterday. It looks pretty fair to me. Would you please give me your opinion if you have time? TIA

The areas of support to look for are 3800 and 3700... This would fill the open gap in the mid 3700 area... After that, we should see a resumption of the up move...
