I am not against the death penalty as a matter of principle. But we have a system that gives extraordinary powers over the administration of death by politicians willing to manipulate the process for political gain. Remember I told you about the governor of our state that commuted to life the death penalty of a multiple murderer simply because his execution coincided with a personal plea from the Pope, who happened to be visiting. Strictly "luck of the draw" as to timing, and Carnahan pandering to the Catholic vote. He's running for the Senate this year.
