You have some very good points, which come out of your real world experience. Managing expectations is not only difficult but no doubt foolish. Why do they think they have to do it? Warren Buffett makes it a practice NEVER to predict earnings or express "comfort" about a range etc. That being said do we gorilla hunters have to worry about one quarter's making the numbers? Somehow I think that detracts from consideration of the real problems, i.e. how is the technology doing, is it still something viral, that everybody needs and everybody has to build on, and the more it's popular the more it's popular etc.
