Re: With Intel servers at 75% of the market today, according to Oracle, Ellison ain't dumb, that's where most of his Oracle 8.1.6 and 8i license money is coming from Tony, Oracle is one of the biggest ponzi schemes on the street today. Their marketing is unethical and really gives people the wrong idea. You've seen those commercials stating that Oracle runs 95% of the fortune e-50, etc. OK, if this was true, how come Oracle has been growing at 15-20% while the Internet is growing much, much faster? The truth is 100% of the fortune 100 use DB2. To start with, Ellison decided to compete with SAP. In turn, SAP made DB2 its database of choice. SAP installations can take up to 3 years or more, so the long term consequences of this are yet to be seen. The truth is that DB2 is now growing 5 times faster than Oracle on UNIX/NT combined, and 9 times faster on UNIX platforms. As an Intel investor, you should know that Win64 will probably never see the light of day on IA64, but you better believe that project Monteray (AIX ported to IA64) will be shipping on IA64 with a whole lot of DB2. To give you an idea how false Oracles claims are, here's a few examples of a few sites that Oracle claims to be the e-business infrastructure:Charles Schwab: DB2 is used for most functions of online trading site, such as all mutual fund trading, some stock trading and all customer records - no Oracle in the trading system at all. The platform is: RS/6000, CICS, WebSphere, OS/390. Oracle: used for Web graphics and content management. UPS: DB2 is the engine for strategic e-business transactional systems like Web site, package tracking system. There are multiple multi-Terabyte databases on IBM software and the platform is OS/390, OS/400. Oracle: used for data warehouse and a financial application.Macy's: DB2 is used for 90% of all processing; applications are being migrated from Oracle to DB2 (e.g. Gift Registry, Buying, Budget Tracking). The president of Federated Department Stores says: "DB2 is preferred database for future development." Oracle is only used for Macy's supply chain applications. JC Penney: DB2 is used for more than 80% of business applications. The Customer Information database is being migrated from SQL Server to DB2. Oracle: only used for Peoplesoft HR application on Windows NT.L.L. Bean: DB2 is used for all enterprise and fulfillment systems, decision-support initiatives and an e-commerce site. The platform is RS/6000 with Net.Commerce. Oracle: used for an ERP application and a small stand-alone merchandising application.REI: REI's Web site has been migrated from Oracle/Netscape to DB2/Net.Commerce and is one of the Top 5 REI stores; up to 1 million visitors/month. Oracle: used for back office applications and product catalog management tools. I could go on and on about these Oracle claims, they are all BS. You get the point, if Oracle runs a back office HR application, they claim they run the whole damb site. Oracle gets a lot of visability on Wall Street because of their slick advertising, but advertising is not reality for Oracle (they actually fired their last advertising firm because they weren't being "aggresive enough" for Oracle). Think about it, 15-20% growth for Oracle when they are the "e" in "e-business"? Clearly the Internet is growing at over 50% per year, shouldn't Oracle? They're not, but DB2 is certainly picking up the slack. When the SAP situation sets in, it will be a huge reality check for Oracle. Of all SAP installs that I know of that have started in the last year, all are DB2. Most of the ones started more than a year ago are Oracle. chic
