According to a spokesman for the Santa Clara, Calif., chip firm, the announcement was made to allow to Intel to seize the reins of the industry's direction.

"Intel's a technology leader, and we wanted to set the date in stone" for the company's OEMs and partners, he said.

This press release needs more analysis then we have given it. What possible benefits would intel get from the anouncement of an anouncement of a "limited" volume release? Clearly it was politically motivated, and we should ask what the motivation is. Perhaps they are afraid that more OEMS might follow HP and make Athlon systems the top of the line for the back to school season? Maybe they want to flush out AMD's cards? After all, this comes right after the P4 "anouncement of an anouncement."

I think the best clue comes from the press release itself:

"Intel's a technology leader, and we wanted to set the date in stone" for the company's OEMs and partners, he said."

Why would the OEMS and partners need it "set in stone," after all, shouldn't they just accept Intel's word in private?
