In terms of liability, a naked call can be more threatening than a futures contract. Grant it, options do not necessarily increase supply as does spot. Unfortunately for cde, their extensive exposure to the fools gold market has decimated their share price. Another case of foolish management appearing to be tantamount to the old widow who is bilked out of her savings by a broker with a great pump and dump stock story.
