At the tail end of a long bear market, a stock, in a sector like Gold, will fall for no good fundamental reason. It falls because most market participants have given up all hope. Conversely, at the tail end of an equity bull market, an index will rise in the face of deteriorating fundamentals, based on the irrational hope that everything will turn out for the best.
At turning points, there is no reason, just a catalyst.
