Hi Mike:

re: "What Went Wrong"

FWIW, as I have been educated in "new" telecom over the past 2 years from various sources, I have learned that USW really didn't know what it was doing, really didn't have a rational, consistent strategy. And I think the referenced article implies this, as Nacchio intends to "clean house" on the various strategies "experimented" by USW, many of which have failed.

Query: What kind of telco rolls out 3 different flavors of DSL? Also, if you will recall, USW was a big proponent of G.lite. Look what happened to that. If you recall any of my posts two years back I has questioned why anyone would move from DMT to G.lite. IMHO, as I stated then, it was too little, too late. Who would want to move to less bandwidth at the sake of few extra thousand feet of distance.

Needless to say, Trujillo implemented a poor & inconsistent strategy that made little sense to a novice like myself. The article indicates that his own hierarchy was too timid to advise him properly.

Nevertheless, it is surprising to see VDSL on the top of the USW chopping list. Perhaps it is very expensive for Q to administer, and Nacchio has "other" visions of where he wants to take Q in this area. Maybe he's a FTTH kind of guy. Just a guess.

Hi Mike the USWest VDSL deployment--last I heard--was expected to be available to about a half million sub by 2004. There is a VDSL alliance [DMT] (which US west is a member) and a VDSL coalition[QAM], and the FSAN group which all have VDSL interests. You may want to peruse their sites. In North America, the companies that are at least testing VDSL are: Aliant, Bell Atlantic, Bell Canada, Bell south, SBC communications, Telus, and US West. In the USWest Phoenix deployment, they had a mere 16000 subs as of 2/00.

"... it's a significant setback for VDSL TV delivery since USWest previously played it up so heavily and so did the press. Wonder what went wrong ..."

It could actually portend something more aggressive. Who knows? Nacchio is bent on fiber, isn't he? Do QWST's wireless plans lend themselves to a replacement in those areas where VDSL is being yanked?

re: USW/Q dumping vdsl, Jeff Pulver in this month's Pulver Report covers this topic rather well, examining some of the motivations and potential outcomes, in a brief article titled:

"How can incumbent telecom operators deal with Internet competition? "

Look for the July 5th Report. You may have to leave your email address, a form of registration, and it will be delivered to you. I don't have access to my own copy at this time, 'wise I'd post it.
