Amy J,

Two factors that could affect the usage of tantalum capacitors.

1) Aluminium electrolytic capacitors are now much more reliable than they were and have lower equivalent series resistance than previously. Having lower cost, they may be used in new designs.

2) High density ceramic capacitors are now available with much higher capacitance values and volumetric density. They can now be used in many situations where tantalums were used previously.
