giving away computers if you sign 2 year deal for their DSL service

I guess that SBC is as desperate as the dialup guys. You could sense that from their negative ad campaign, any time you have to concentrate your advertising efforts on your competition's product it is bad.....you are giving them free advertising and it tells people that you don't really have anything to say about your own.

There is also the free DSL guys, this has to have SBC concerned. Meanwhile thousands of people a day sign up with @Home and very few leave. ATHM has extremely low customer acquisition costs and no churn.

It's good that SBC is doing this though, we don't want @Home to get too fat and happy, they need to stay on the ball, sign up those subs.

It's $60 a month for 2 years, probably at 128kbps.

The people who are attracted by free computers are also attracted by free internet access. They won't pay $60 a month. It's a marketing mistake on SBC's part. I expect it to be a failure.

Jay

Larry,

Not much. If it posed any real threat ATHM could do the same. Come to think of it maybe ATHM could offer a cable ready PC and cut down on the little-old-lady-with-a-486 service calls. Leave that to Steve Case.

If you follow the DSL market you will notice that reality has begun nipping at their heels. All the DSL stocks are in the toilet and the BOCs are offering free PCs. Why would they do this? Demand is soft at their prices? They want everyone to have a new PC? They have made commitments that are increasingly difficult to keep?

ATHM doesn't promote their service well at all and people are snapping it up and not leaving. Imagine what will happen if they get their shit together.

Did you read my post about the CFO leaving? Most of the old guard is gone and the newbies are hungry for success. They haven't made their millions and fame yet so they can't go riding into the Decliner Perkins sunset. They have something to prove. I like that better than the other.
