The company said that the two chips, MVC-B (mobile video coder and decoder-B) and MoVision can be used in both W-CDMA handsets and cdma2000 handsets. W-CDMA is the standard being adopted by European markets while cdma2000 is an evolution of the cdmaOne technology developed by Qualcomm for third-generation mobile communications (3G). Unlike the video ASICs that are currently used in the fixed line network, the newly developed chips are power-efficient, allowing for easy portability, the company claimed. Video ASICs are currently in the development stage at other leading companies in the sector, including Toshiba, NEC and 8x8 and LGIC's products could potentially replace imports, according to the company "We've been working on W-CDMA technology since 1997 and we are confident that we will have developed thie whole system, from network to handsets, by the scheduled commencement of 3G services in May 2002. The two ASICS that we recently developed are a proof that we are having success in developing essential W-CDMA technologies," said Lee Jeong-rhul, executive vice president and chief of R&D center at LGIC.
