The civil rights act of 1964 was a watershed act that finally put an end to lot of overt descrimination, especially in the Tom Crow south. I think LBJ deserves a lot of credit for sticking his neck out and pushing the civil rights act through congress. The Democratic party has paid dearly for their support of the civil rights act of 1964. But, LBJ did the right thing and deserves credit for it. The Great Society was never implemented in any grand way (Viet Nam got in the way of that) and certainly doesn't outweigh LBJ's civil rights legacy.
