Today's WSJ had an interesting article entitled ``Williams is kingmaker among telecom startups,'' pointing out that in exchange for placing orders with new optical startups, Wuiliams often receives stock far below the IPO price. For example, in exchange for placing a $30M order with ONIS, William received stock with a current value of $183M for a stock investment worth only $10M. Similarly, after placing a $25M order with Cerent, it received stock (now CSCO stock) currently worth $51M. The other companies with which WMB struck similar deals are Sycamore, Sonus, Accelerated Networks and Corvis.
