Sumitomo, NEC and Ariba said today they plan to invest $7.9 million (850 million yen) in a Japanese e-marketplace for office supplies, books and stationery.

Software maker Ariba said the new company, which has yet to be named, is expected to handle about $37 million in e-commerce transactions in its first fiscal year.

NEC and Sumitomo will hold about 80 percent equity in the company they said would begin operations in November, while Ariba and Hewlett-Packard Japan will take a combined stake of about 20 percent.

The partners anticipate revenue of $1.4 million in the first year, an amount that should increase to 14 times as much in fiscal 2002, Ariba said.

Glenn I'm starting to conclude the same thing. For a while I thought there would actually be a "first mover" winner but I am starting to think there's just no pot of gold at the end of the online retail rainbow.

I think the smart way to do it is as you do- use the web to raise awareness of your business, and provide consumers with info so they are even more motivated to come to your shop. Use the web to augment other forms of advertising.

Dual channel outlet is the only in the current and foreseable environment that will work.

Why do I need a dual channel retailer? Sometimes I need an item right away, such as from the grocery store or Home Depot. But why can't an e-only retailer succeed?
