Hello Maurice Winn,

Click on "Product Pavilion" then "Subscriber Equipment". Notice how thin Nokia is for such a dominant company in other air interfaces...oooops.

Everyone knows that NOKIA does not have much of a CDMA offering. Their president even admitted as much and NOKIA is now taking steps to increase their product line in CDMA.

My question for you or anyone is why is NOKIA making a serious effort to get into the CDMA market when the world is going to WCDMA? From a business point of view, do what you do best. NOKIA should focus on GSM, GPRS, EDGE and WCDMA. According to them that is where 90% of the world is going. NOKIA is wasting resources on their CDMA venture when they should focus on the dominate part of the market.

It makes no sense to me having them go after only 10% of the future when they have 90% with WCDMA, EDGE GPRS and GSM.

Makes me wonder.

Thank You

JK

The lack of understanding of the uncertainties associated with WCDMA is what leads some analysts to keep on recommending companies like Nokia, and what keeps even fewer analysts recommending QUALCOMM. This will all change, as you noted, Maurice. One additional thought: Perhaps the real strategy of Ericsson and Nokia is to prolong for as long as possible the use of GSM, for which they receive royalties, or, being the owners of the proprietary technology, can make higher profit margins. The longer they can use GSM, the less time remaining on some of the key QUALCOMM CDMA patents. This strategy would explain their desire to exclude QUALCOMM as much as possible from markets in China, Europe, etc. I think IJ has absolutely the right attitude. Just be patient.

Maurice,

Re:<Stephen, what thuggery have you experienced? That sounds like a devaluation of a word. Some here have
threatened violence and that is thuggery.>

For what it is worth, I did experience a cyber version of "being visited at night by men in brown", so to speak <vbg>. And no, I am not referring to you or Ramsey, so please don't get offended.

RE:<The Q! Moderated thread is to avoid discussions like this one, which have been conducted, over, and over, and
over, and over, and over again. It also keeps it leaner and meaner so people [all of us] can get the juicy bits in a
short time, which we all like to do sometimes.>

IMHO, moderated threads are a good idea, but it does not work well in practice, simply because it gives rise to unintended side-effects, e.g. some members think the rules become the raison d'etre, and others think it's "wave the little red Q!book society".

In any case, I beg to differ on the supposedly superior intrinsic value of the Moderated Thread; personally, I have derived more value from the other Q threads, but then again, this is JMHO.

However, I respect the collective wish for "a sort of a private club" <vbg again>, so in future I am happy to be just a reader of the Thread.

I am reminded of what Gen Omar Bradley (or was it Karl Malden?) said to Patton (or was it George C. Scott?) in the movie: "George, there is one big difference between you and me. You are here because you love it, I'm here because it's my job!"

Me, I'm here because I want to look after my investments, not because I am enamored of any technology or stock <bg>.

May your investments prosper, and it's good to hear from the Land of the Long White Cloud.

Best,
Steve
