Here might be the starting of a killer app?

QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies Announces Latest Generation of Voice Recognition Software for MSM Chipsets
Powerful New Features Contained in Version 4.0 Software
TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 17, 2000--QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq:QCOM - news), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced PureVoice(TM) Voice Recognition (VR), Release 4.0 software for QUALCOMM's Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) chipsets. The industry-leading features contained in this latest software release include speaker-dependent name dialing for up to 100 names, speaker-independent voice digit dialing, a new VR capability that combines both speaker-dependent and speaker-independent features, and support for voice-attached email.

``The powerful new features available in PureVoice VR 4.0 will allow manufacturers to offer consumers advanced voice-recognition capabilities without handset re-engineering,'' said Johan Lodenius, senior vice president of marketing and product management for QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. ``QUALCOMM supplies VR solutions to more handset manufacturers than any other supplier in the industry. This new release further solidifies the position of QUALCOMM's PureVoice VR solution as the most versatile and best performing voice-recognition software available in the market.''

PureVoice VR 4.0's speaker-dependent name dialing feature offers support for up to 100 voice dial names, with capacity to manage the entire phone book of a typical wireless handset. The easy-to-use speaker-independent digit dialing feature, allows voice entry of a string of numbers in a hands-free mode, greatly increasing safety during automotive use or at other times when physically dialing a number would be inconvenient or unsafe.

PureVoice VR 4.0 software also allows manufacturers to combine both speaker-dependent and speaker-independent commands at the same time. The PureVoice VR 4.0 engine can listen for either type of command, thus providing a more user-friendly handset that reduces menu complexity since the need to switch between modes is eliminated.

The voice-attached email feature uses voice recording technology to allow the user to create a voice memo which can then be sent as email (on handsets whose Web browsers allow file attachments), to either another PureVoice-enabled handset or desktop computer for playback. QUALCOMM offers free download of the PureVoice codec, which when installed on a PC, provides complete record and playback capabilities. This will allow the integration of a home or business computer into an advanced wireless message center.

PureVoice VR 4.0 software for the MSM3100(TM) chipset will begin shipping later this year.

The ultimate killer application is Video-on-Demand and wireless video conferencing. In the nearer term, streaming media playback on the handheld device will be popular. This will start with MP3 audio playback and then MPEG-4 video playback.

Check out Packet Video regarding video playback technology.

Playback requires that only the forward link have high data rates (base station to mobile), and that is why 1x CDMA2000 reserves the high speeds for the forward link.

Concerning the Internet in general, landline (fiber-to-the curb) or wireless (QCOM HDR), I am firm believer that Video-on-Demand will one day be considered an essential technology much like TV is today.

video on demand anywhere ( or anywhere a screen with an antennae ) is the ultimate app for wireless hi bandwidth,
but thats a way out both cuz of both bandwidth and content liscensing limitations.

But almost instantly upon getting reliable wirless bandwidth
over 64k-128k is music (mp3) streaming anywhere that i have
my cellphone/pda or 'mp3' radio.

This will give me my entire music collection (at home on my
hard disk, or on the [inter]network somewhere) all the time
anywhere!

Now a question regarding that is it true that web surfing
tends to be BURSTY traffic, but streaming media tends to be
CONSTANT traffic. Is there any consideration of BURSTY v.s.
CONSTANT bandwidth in the design of all the 3G systems??

Re 3G Killer Ap - how about video phone?

Can you imagine how teenagers would react to that?

I believe there are some low bandwidth services being offered now, but with 3G, you could get very good images and motion.
