The Capitalist or Entrepreneur of a Service Business is like the Producer and Director of a Motion Picture. The Entrepreneur Produces the Vision (and writes the script) of the Company and Directs its Employees (or Actors) as to the Best Ways to Enact the Vision; that is to say, to get the best results, in the sense of maximizing profit. Each person has their own Style. What matters is Substance and the Caring Attitude they bring to my clients.

Good Workers are hard to find. When you get one, it pays to give him or her a nice living, and to keep him or her, if possible. It's time consuming and costly to constantly hire replacements and to train them. The people who work for me are on my Team and I care about them as Human Beings. That means that my door is always open to them if they have a personal problem. I'm always there to help and make recommendations, if I'm asked. A good worker with personal problems can affect their job performance negatively. That's partly why I care and listen. I also just care about them as Human Beings.

Raises, Bonuses, 401K plans, Recognition for Good Work, along with Empowerment, keep most of my workers happy. A nice Christmas Party at the end of the year doesn't hurt either.

I'm dealing with a clientele and employees who require a very gentle caring approach. I make the money through Honey and Substance. I can easily play hardball if I have to; but I found that approach rarely pays off. I try to get my workers to feel that it is their company too. I listen to them. I incorporate many of their ideas. I empower them. I learn from them. I get invited to their Kids Weddings, Bar Mitzvah's, Sweet Sixteens and Special Ocassions; and I look foward to going with my wife and we usually have a great time.

I know it's a little different if you work for a Government Agency.

I've had a very minimal amount of theft amongst employees in my business. Mostly supplies in the early years of operation. That problem has been solved.

In my service business, it's easy to evaluate a worker: the same customers keep coming back again and again and request the same person who serviced them before. They get attached to the same person, if that person is good. I walk around and I know the look of a satisfied customer and I always ask if their satisfied.

A Very Tight Controlled State Department Like Atmosphere is counter productive in my business. But I'm aware of everything that goes on in my place of business; and my workers know deep down who their boss is and who they have to answer to if they mess up.
