hi pw,

i want to clarify that we are talking about the same file, or more accurately, the same folder.

the index.dat file on my machine resides in the c:\windows\cookies folder. it does not reside in the c:\windows\temporary internet files folder.

also, kaycee and i were discussing the content.ie5 folder that resides in the temporary internet files folder, and the oddly named folders within the content.ie5 folder.

reason i restate all of this is that your post seems to indicate that deleting the index.dat file will get rid of the above-mentioned content.ie5 folder and its contents, but that is not the case. (you don't mention the content.ie5 folder specifically, but you are replying to kaycee's post [ #reply-14055698 ] in which the topic is the content.ie5 folder's contents.) in fact, i wanted to ask you if you knew if it was advisable to go ahead and delete the content.ie5 folder, without causing problems? but i see that we need to all get on the same page first before we can do much more with this.

of course, it may well be that i am the one who is lagging behind here... in which case i promise to do extra work to catch up. <g3>

so, what are your thoughts on the content.ie5 folder and its contents?

and..... is your index.dat file located in the c:\windows\cookies folder, like mine is?

:)

mark

Thanks for the reply. Sad to say I kind of miss those days of DOS.

Yes, a search for index.dat shows it in windows\tempor~. However when I look for it there it isn't there. As you say an illusion.

I noticed on the search that I have an index.dat in windows\cookies also. Didn't even know this existed. Where do sites go to look for cookies the temporary internet folder or the cookies folder? When you use IE to clean the temp folder it will not delete the cookies. It can be done in DOS but some of them are useful and I don't want to lose them. If my sites eg SI looks in windows\cookies for my settings then I can delete the temp folder in one step with DOS.

PS did not reformat for this but was interested to see what happened when I did.
