Bull Marks Industry First by Successfully Porting 64-Bit UNIX Operating System from Project Monterey to an 8-Way Itanium Server

Achievement underscores Bull's commitment to the IA-64 platform

BILLERICA, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 17, 2000-- Bull announced today in North America that it has successfully ported and run the 64-bit UNIX operating system from Project Monterey (code-named Monterey/64) on an 8-way Intel® Itanium(TM) processor-based server, thereby achieving an industry first and clearly positioning itself as a market leader for scalability and performance in the IA-64 arena.

Project Monterey is a major UNIX operating system initiative led by IBM, Intel and SCO and supported by key OEMs, such as Bull, to extend the enterprise strengths of AIX® to the Intel IA-64 architecture.

As one of the leading members of the Monterey OEM council, Bull has recently ported and run Monterey/64 on an 8-way Itanium(TM) server. This has been achieved by Bull's R&D teams in France. This breakthrough achievement clearly demonstrates Bull's market leadership in developing and integrating scalable server infrastructures for the most demanding e-business customer environments.

Bull is the only company to have successfully ported Monterey/64 to an Itanium server configuration greater than 4-way. Bull is committed to further improve its lead and is now actively engaged in the porting of Monterey/64 to a 16-way Itanium server.

``We expect IA-64 to bring additional business for Bull on top of our existing IA-32 Express5800 business and our existing Escala PowerPC(TM) business,'' said Don Zereski, president & CEO of Bull Americas. This additional business will grow from new markets such as e-business, Internet service providers, application service providers, banking/finance and telecommunications.``

``We are very excited with Bull's significant progress in demonstrating the scalability of Monterey/64,'' said Ross Mauri, vice president, UNIX software, IBM Corporation. ``We have a long-lasting relationship with Bull on AIX®, and we look forward to extending it in the emerging IA-64 space.''

Bull confirms its strategic commitment to the IA-64 platform

This announcement further underscores Bull's commitment to the IA-64 platform. Bull is actively engaged in a technology co-operation with Intel to bring to market highly reliable and scalable servers for the Itanium processor and its successors, starting in the timeframe of the availability of Itanium processors. Bull's forthcoming range of IA-64 servers will support Monterey/64, the 64-bit version of Windows 2000 and 64-bit Linux.

In addition, Bull is actively pursuing the recruitment of ISV partners to enable a wide range of e-business solutions on its IA-64 servers.

Bull has recently set up partnerships with a significant number of ISVs, notably Baan (ERP, Supply Chain Management, B2B, and CRM), BEA Systems, Inc. (The E-Commerce Transactions Company(TM)), Centura Software Corp. (mobile enterprise solutions), Daleen Technologies (Internet-enabled customer management and billing for data and communications providers), DST Innovis (customer management and billing for the video/broadband, telecommunications and utility industries), Eastman Software (process management), Evidian (secure e-infrastructure management software) and Roxen Internet Software (Web servers). Bull is providing them with the technical support that is necessary for the port of their applications to IA-64 within its Intel-approved ASC (Application Solution Center).

Bull's ASC is available to customers and partners to help them with IA-64 porting operations. The centre, equipped with the latest Intel server technology and staffed by highly qualified specialists with the necessary methodologies, provides the ideal conditions for analyzing, adapting, configuring, porting and optimizing software for IA-64. Porting expertise is available for Monterey/64, 64-bit Windows 2000 and 64-bit Linux.

Paul, I was thinking about handheld PCs and one analyst's note that applications on them were getting more complex and PC-like, and also about cell phones' applications getting more complex as well. To me, this trend calls for a lot of attention to compatibility and standardization. This plays right into Intel's hand, who is the king (gorilla?) of those things. Maybe that's why we're seeing the hand-helds of all kinds turn up with Intel processors?
