SemiconEng,

Of course, there's no guarantee that ANY 64 bit OS(s) will work with Sledgehammers Extended-32 bit architecture, is there...?

While that is true, the task of creating such an OS will be simplified by the fact that the source code will be there and a 64 bit extension of existing 32bit compilers will be something a few interns can do, compared to the Merced compiler, that probably matches complexity of Apollo landing on the Moon.

SemiconEng,

Which is also exactly the situation Intel finds itself in with IA64. I'd bet a nickel that Linux will be the first 64-bit OS on both of them.
