The original American patriots were trying to find a way to make government work better. The fear of tyranny was fresh, but so was the hope for a reasonable program of self- government. Politics was deemed an honorable profession, and though liberty was a guiding value, no one doubted that the first task of government was to attend to the common good. Jefferson himself violated the Constitution in unilaterally making the Louisiana Purchase, because he thought the time was ripe and the advance of the common good too obvious to hesitate. He also founded the University of Virginia to advance learning and research in that state, with public subsidy, in pursuit of the common good...........
