Jack- Your query about GLWs LEAF and the comparable offerings from LU---

The advances in the art of optical transmission of data, higher bandwidth, longer distances, DWDM and variants, soliton propagation etc., have placed demands on improving
all aspects of optical fiber to meet those advances. GLW
invented the fiber and with its continuing R&D activities
has crafted fiber to stay with the art. LEAF is one of those and the article that Pat pointed you to--

lfw.pennwellnet.com

describes one of those advances, the fabrication of FiberBraggGratings, FBGs, with improved applicability. This
is just one aspect in the fiber business. With the demonstrated R&D effort applied by GLW, I believe it gives them the edge over LU. LEAF compares well to what LU offers
and GLW makes more advances. I tip the scale to GLW in this area, but both are good and both of them together cannot meet the demand for fiber---YET.
