S&P substitution is a positive overall. If it hadn't happened PALM would have had massive selling late next week as all funds dumped it. So yes, COMS could get hit now but that's better than PALM getting eviscerated.

I should clarify a little, I think COMS in the 10's on 7/28 is possible, but it would be the low end of the likely range. Probable range is 10 1/2 to 13 1/2 (just my guess, BWDIK).

My perspective may be distorted because I shorted COMSV at 12 1/4 to lock in my PALM/COMS arb profit. I am sleeping better at night with the arb locked in. Enjoy the shiny new COMSV shares I sold you :)

David,

I agree that the shedding of COMS by the S&P index is short term negative on the security. I also picked up a few shares (after my broker found out how to trade the stock - cost me a $1 per share .. in at $12.75).

Based on your understanding of the COMS business .. how many quarters before they show positive earnings? I am thinking that if the stock slides to $9 to $10, it might be an opportunity to pick up a few more shares. After all .. they still have $8.75 cash/share and $14.50 current assets/share.

What are your thoughts on how the 'market' will value this liquidity.

David,

I received my Value Line today. The publication initated coverage of Palm, and also continued its commentary of 3Com. Here are a couple of comments that relate directly to our prior discussion,

"Indeed, we estimate that COMS shares may fall to as low as the mid- to upper teens..." This comment was in discussion to the pending volatility of COMS with the pending PALM spinoff.

Value Line indicated that the buyback will not be "active until the dust has settled from the spinoff".

I'm showing an indication of "330" million shares of COMS after the spinoff.

The whole process will be interesting! Have a great weekend, and take it easy! We'll need your insights over the coming 1-2 weeks. ad
