Special providence is distinguished from general providence by the particularity of interference. General providence is the way God ordered the world; special providence involves God or his agent fixing something, as in response to a prayer, for example. It is usually applied to interference that falls short of a miracle, and could be a mere improbability in natural terms. Well, no, the sort of thing I am thinking of is if God ensured that crucial accretions occurred during evolution, that is, acted as editor. In historical terms, it would be making small arrangements that massed at the crucial point to create an effect. Since I do not understand your objection otherwise, I am not sure what to say. Why would intervening to give early man a soul be pointless?
