OT: BP I've tried to write a response to your dancing basketball player question but stupid AOL keeps disconnecting me before I can finish. Finally wrote it off line and tried to cut and paste it with no luck. I'll try again later. Just got this lap top and must be doing something wrong.
Bob

Just figured it out

OT re: <<Hey Bob, is Grant going to be like the kid in the commercial who decided he "wanted to dance" rather than be drafted and sign for 7 figures and make his dad rich? <vbg> >>
BP, fortunately Dad already has the 7 figures (thanks in no small part to MRVC) though no where close to where he was in early March. That takes a lot of pressure off of Grant. I think his stock has risen greatly as a result of this camp. There are 520 kids in the camp from 50 states and 30 countries and Grant was one of 5 picked to work with Rick Pitino in his lecture. There is a big time talent scout here who already knew his name after the first night. Our H.S coach is from this area and is vacationing a couple hours away so he came down Thursday. He knows the scout from his days as a coach at West Point. When he started to tell him about Grant, he got as far as “I have a kid up here from Florida” when the scout cut him off with “ you mean Harrell, the lefty—he’s a tough kid.” I take that as a good sign. He has already watched two of his games. The Ivy League appears to be in the bag. Princeton wrote us saying he has the grades and skill to play for them and their young coach here told me he has been following Grant around. The Harvard scout is kind of standoffish. He thinks he’s not allowed to talk to parents (which isn’t true) but another coach from there has made several calls to us. I think the William & Mary coach would like to move in with me and marry my daughter to lock Grant up for early signing. The big question mark is the Holy Grail, Stanford. They sent me a seemingly encouraging letter after receiving Grant’s highlight tape and have talked to his H.S. coach but I know that the coach tends to pitch Grant a little low and told them that he wasn’t sure Grant was quick enough to play defense in the Pac 10 and he stupidly suggested he might consider playing as a walk on. Two days after he talked to Stanford, he changed his mind about the quickness issue based on his play in the Sunshine States Games.

I hope to be able to button hole the talent scout before the camp is over get his assessment as to whether Grant has a realistic chance to play for Stanford. I’d hate to pass up a chance to sign early with W & M or an Ivy League school only to have Stanford offer nothing or walk on status. I have a great deal to learn about playing this recruiting game. The next few months will be very interesting.

Sure glad I’ll be home before MRVC releases on Thursday. I gave back some of the shares I acquired during the plunge to 42 in order to get my margin debt under control as I climbed out of the hole I dug myself into in late March. It sure would be nice to still have 24,000 shares considering the level we’ve returned to but I sleep better with my margin lower.

Another time I’ll share with you guys a new category of stocks I’ve discovered that may present a good place to put some of our MRVC riches as I hope we all prudently follow Sector’s example from January and take a little or even most of our MRVC money off the table as it continues to climb.

Cheers,
Bob
