James,
God did provide atonement in many ways and times under the Mosaic covenant. As John the baptist said when he saw Jesus " behold the lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world" the difference is that Jesus takes sin away not covering it to need to be done again and again. God never expected them to keep the law as He does not expect perfection from us now. However, there are standards that God has to keep order in the universe and they have to be uncompromising. Therefore atonement is made for those that will believe in Him.
<<<God found favor in Abraham, for example, because he obeyed God by faith rather than following the law of Moses.>>>
There is a small problem with this statement. Abraham was before Moses and there was no law at this time. The faith Abraham had was based on his heart and therefore he became the first circumcised Jew.
The Bible is a complete package and we each have to walk with Him and obey Him with grateful hearts for the atonement he has provided, the Lamb of God that has taken away the sins of the world.
Lord Bless,
Nancy

James,

I never did get the impression that Christians feel that they are perfect(at least most of them anyways:-) ).

In fact, I have always felt that the concept of sin and man being abhorrent to God in his "sinful" state, was the hardest aspect of Christianity for me to wrap my arms around.

By the way, I find that this thread is much more interesting to hang around when people exchange thoughts freely without fear of being verbally attacked, as has been the case recently since the last big donnybrook.
