The company, which is controlled by MCI-Worldcom Inc. (WCOM), posted a consolidated net profit of 123.5 million reals ($1=BRR1.80) in the second quarter of this year, up from BRR77.5 million in the like period of 1999. The earnings corresponded to BRR0.37 per thousand shares, versus BRR0.23 in the year-earlier period. Data revenues surged 65% in the second quarter of 2000, totaling BRR473.2 million and accounting for around 22% of Embratel's total revenues in the period. In the second quarter of 1999, data service represented 18% of total sales, the company said in a written statement. Embratel noted that Internet revenues more than doubled in the second quarter of 2000 in a year-earlier comparison as a result of growth in the Internet Service Provider business - in particular demand from ISPs offering free service - and access for business customers. Domestic long-distance phone service continued to represent the bulk of Embratel's revenues in the second quarter of the year, though the segment's share of overall business declined to 58% from 64% in the year-on-year comparison. Domestic long-distance revenues totaled BRR1.22 billion in the April-June period in 2000, up 21% from the same period last year, which Embratel attributed to line and traffic growth, the company's entry into the intra-state segment and fixed-to-cellular revenues which the company started to receive in July 1999. International long-distance revenues jumped 60% in the second quarter, to BRR362.4 million, in large part because of a higher rate for the state-levied ICMS value-added tax. Embratel posted a cumulative first-half net income of BRR273.5 million, up from BRR8.9 million in the first six months of 1999. Just before midday Tuesday at the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange, Embratel preferred shares were up 0.5% at BRR40.10, while the main Bovespa stock index was off 0.6%. -By Stephen Wisnefski, Dow Jones Newswires; (5511) 813-1988; stephen.wisnefski@dowjones.com (This story was originally published by Dow Jones Newswires) Copyright (c) 2000 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
