it sounds like a chapter out of The Innovator's Dilemma. Disruptive technology,

Precisely. Just like each new innovation in disk drives was driven primarily by a new market that valued the features of the new, e.g., smaller size, even when head-to-head comparison favored the old, e.g., cost per unit of storage. In time we expect digital to cover more and more of the ground of film and to do so at lower and lower costs. It has a ways to go, though, before it will compete directly in the low end.

I am concerned about Bluetooth, which could eliminate the need for removable storage.

I am hardly predicting a victory for rotating memory, just trying to point out that flash has some interesting competition. Who knows, this competition could come in the form of cellular technology built in to every camera and massive central storage!

Ok, how does Bluetooth eliminate the need for removable storage? (Just in case there are any who don't know, Bluetooth: a short distance communication system to connect devices locally. References:

)

Here are some possibilities I see, with a try at a refutation:
1. Network storage vs. local storage. Why store anything locally if you are always connected to the net? Refutation: Connections or the servers necessary aren't always available. There is down time. There are also confidentiality issues, where you might want to keep things locally.

2. Storage on another device on your person. Refutation: Well, then that device needs removable media.

What other scenarios are you considering?

Thanks,
Tom CF

Frank,

In don't understand Bluetooth enough to comprehend your comment: I am concerned about Bluetooth, which could eliminate the need for removable storage.

How will Bluetooth help me when I'm taking photographs 1000 miles from my home, walking around a city or in the countryside without a laptop?
