Kemble, if you look at Dell's PC growth re last qtr vs. IDC/Dataquest info:

IDC/Dataquest reported last quarter that Dell's PC/Laptop business grew at a rate of about 30% per annum (sell-off then too)

This quarter they report Dell's PC/Laptop business is growing at a rate of 22% per annum

Actually, both numbers are wrong reference Dell's actual performance, or expected performance.

Dell reported PC/Laptop sales, per last qtr 2000 (1st qtr) of combined $5.96 billion. Last year (99) sales were combined $4.64 billion. This represents about a 22% increase overall. IDC/Dataquest reported the growth rate at 30% right before Dell reported their numbers.

IDC/Dataquest redefine their categories and come up with a 22% growth rate this quarter (probably more accurate) and many in the financial press fall apart. Yet, the rate is substantially the same as Dell's combined rate for last qtr. and the two qtr.s before that.

Actually, Dell's growth is being made up in the Enterprise, Laptop, Peripheral, and Service divisions. Peripheral sales increase exponentially as more and more people own PCs worldwide. IDC/Dataquest's redefinition of this category left out Dell's own definition of included peripheral sales.
