Concerning the IPO & distribution mechanisms:

Having looked at more successful IPO's that companies have priced recently include 3COM's. To this day, shareholders of 3COM never received any stock since the company spun off the 20% away from the shareholders.

The original Palm IPO passed ~5% of the total shares into the market, the rest remained with 3COM (~95%). All the remaining Palm shares held by 3COM are being distributed to the COMS stockholders this Thursday at the ratio of 1.484 PALM share for each 1.000 COMS share. This specific distribution date was announced several weeks ago.

COMSV and PALMV (post-split stand-in stocks) have been trading for about two weeks with settlement on the 28th. Presumably these stand-in stocks will relieve some of the explosive trading pressures you might otherwise expect to see on Thursday. At this time COMS = COMSV + 1.484*PALMV to a very close approximation. I am pleased that I'll be receiving my PALM shares at about a $32 basis, that's $6 under the IPO price. I was just hoping to get in on PALM somewhere less than $50 but the tech trainwreck pushed things down a notch or two.

Watching the knashing of teeth and wringing of hands by some the more anxious 3COM stockholders during the last four months has been a real education for me. Well, we'll all be seeing these interesting scenarios and speculations play out over the next few months. We just need to relax and enjoy the ride on the Q Line!
