The August 14, 2000 edition of Fortune magazine carries a six page review of Gemstar's prospects and it's generally a positive assessment. It even includes a full page picture of Henry's smiling face.

The article is much too long to quote in full but here are what seem (in my entirely biased editorial judgment) to be some of the salient quotes.

"So Gemstar is clearly a company about the future, a bet on Henry Yuen's ability to execute two big and unproven ideas: EPGs as portals, and e-books."

"... Yuen and and Leung are extremely frugal. A single employee at Gemstar, for example, handles public relations and investor relations, and even the smallest expenditures must be approved by Yuen and Leung." (Which may explain the frequently voiced complaints on this site about inadequate investor communications.)

I will look to see if article access is posted online at Fortune yet. For those of you who are concerned about GMST's short term technical indicators and who are looking for an exit point this article may provide some temporary lift.

For my part, I'm looking to reenter after selling on 7/14 at around $73.00. I believe that Gorilla Game analysis aside this article and the AT&T rollout of an expanded IPG format are enough to better GMST's prospects over the short term by raising its public identity even in the face of a receding NASDAQ.

That Fortune article does not appear on their website and you may need to invest $4.95 for a paper copy.

For those of you that acted quickly on my last recommendation, you had a chance to sell at what was no doubt the intraday high-to me. Ouch.

I (stupidly and naively) thought that if/when the merger was approved, Gemstar stock would begin to reflect the confidence of the market in the company. Granted, there's not a lot of confidence out there in any tech stock at the moment.

I am wondering, however, what the next hurdles are for the company to get over, get under, get through...any insights would be appreciated.

Scientific Atlanta CEO was just interviewed on CNBC, and the gist, as I understood it, was that they are accomplishing what TIVO does in 2 different, better ways.

How does what they are doing affect our GMST?
