The damage done by each atomic bomb was less than that done by previous strategic bombing with incendiary bombs, and, given the ferocity with which the Japanese defended Okinawa, it was a virtual certainty that there would have been more casualties of all kinds had we invaded the Home Islands........

The Soviets MIRV'd their missiles, however, and they actually had a greater number of warheads than us. Plus you should remember that the Chinese still have ICBMs pointed at us, something most of the politicians and the public seem to forget. Yes, we used atomic weapons first, but we were lucky. Had the Germans successfully completed the atomic weapons they were working on first and mated them to the V-2s (and A-3s - a rudimentary ICBM) plus adopted them to their jet fighter bombers we'd all be in the Third Reich right now. You are wrong. The Germans murdered 6 million plus in death camps. They also murdered 60,000 Britishers in city bombing. The Japanese murdered unmeasured thousands in Nanking. The British murdered hundreds of thousands in fire-bombing raids in Hamburg and Dresden and other cities. The Americans at least in Europe tried high-level precision bombing before joining the British in destroyed cities. The Americans killed hundreds of thousands of civilians in fire raids on Tokyo, especially on March 9-10, 1945. The Mongols wiped out entire cities, built hills of skulls. Americans introduced small-pox infested blankets to the Indians and killed off the buffalo. The Japanese government refused to surrender when it was beaten. They had to be crushed. I would have dropped an atom bomb on the Palace.
