Detente was much like shovelling sand against the sea. It worked but was unsustainable. Yeah, we opted against using nukes in Korea - a good thing. Maybe on average we are safer but I think it is still likely some event will occur. I agree that it will be plutonium-based, if nuclear. Rouge nation possession of nukes disturbs me greatly because they have so little to lose. But, your right - these are the suitcase weapons and not 10 Megaton devices of the heavyweight mid-70's Soviet variety. Makes my house less of a target. Wouldn't want to be downtown in a large, visible American city like NY or DC.
