I read Das Kapital and found it didn't address the true nature of people - like the tendency for laziness and greed. I like to distinguish between "big-C" and "little-C" communists. I argue that there isn't and never will be a true Marxist ("little-C") state. Some revolutions start with a Marxist philosophy but they all end up like China, Nicaragua, Russia and Cuba - totalitarian regimes controlled by strong-arm dictators or else, they end up as oligarchies. There are values of compassion, decency and democracy in Marxism about which most people are completely ignorant. Some of these values are very nice to hold on to especially when you view your position in society as being very weak. Heck, if I wasn't pullin' down my salary, I'd probably not feel as good about our system as I do. It is disingenuous for me to use my social position to put intellectual blinkers on. I'm not really a Socialist (heck I've even voted Republican at times), so I find it ironic that I'm here upholding some socialist principles. I believe in the profit motive, individual choice, absolute personal freedom and responsibility, but look at places like Hong Kong in the '80s where I saw a pathetic old man (quadruple amputee) begging in the streets, selling pencils. Do I want to risk living in a land where there is no bottom? My libertarian leanings aside, I recognize the real need for some intervention. It is shocking to think of someone ending up in his condition. We treat many pets better than we treat some people. So, maybe we should just spend some of our time reaching down and pulling down. Keeping the social structure flatter keeps everyone happier. If you're doing better, help a little. Give some thanks. If you're doing worse, help yourself and take only the help you need. Institutionalizing this is the tough part. We must monitor what works. Use the invisible hand.
