There has to be a model out there that is workable that would allow fair compensation for music and other artistic work that can be distributed over the internet. What that model is I have no idea.

The way the music industry is structured now, however, smaller acts with little or no mass appeal and which don't draw the big bucks don't get promoted and eventually fade away. The internet should level the playing field some and get more money into the hands of the musicians themselves. I've discovered some artists on MP3.com who I'd never have learned about otherwise, and I've bought DAT CD's from the site for $5.99 each. I'd be willing to pay for music on a subscription basis or possibly a per-song basis.

If you've read the Steven King web site, his intention is to try to see if it's possible to circumvent big business and let the artist and the consuming public interact without the middleman. I hope it succeeds. I plan to download the chapter this weekend and I do plan to pay for it. I suspect a lot of others will also. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

You know, Jorj, I was just discussing Napster with my son and somehow I think the notion of "free" music must be a generational thing. (BTW, where does that leave you? teehee) ......Anyway, I was making the point to him that no matter how you cut it, using a site like Napster is depriving the copyright holder of his just compensation. Ultimately the argument just boiled down to the notion that since the artists only get about .50 to $1.50 per CD, he felt Napster was "justified". But he felt that ultimately the artists should be able to be paid a royalty for each download. I think he just wants to cut out the middle man.<gg>
