catlady,

i've got cable modem (actually one way cm, using dialup connection upstream and cm downstream), and have been very happy with blackice defender (bid) from networkice. there have been a lot of stability issues cropping up in the last month or so with bid upgrades. very crashy versions were released, but now extra patches seem to have settled things down.

i just added norton personal firewall 2000 ("AtGuard, which was bought by Symantec and is sold under a different name now"). npf was just 'unbundled' from norton internet security 2000 and can now be purchased separately. nis includes norton antivirus, something i already have as a part of norton systemworks. gee, can i use the name norton more times in one post?

anyway, it's cool running both the firewall AND the intrusion detection system together. i like your idea/plan to use an old box as a hardware firewall. i'd like to eventually do that as well.

hope the cable installer shows up soon!

:)

Can I ask how to check if Microsoft Net is turned on?

Thanks..David

CL,

If you leave Microsoft networking turned on on
the cable connection, everyone in your neighborhood can connect to your PC.

Would not a neighbor need your UserName and PW to gain access to your files?

Just wondering,
Phil
