The article most carefully underplays how bad durians smell. Hotels in the Malay area will generally not allow a durian stand within a mile or two of their facilities, and guests who have been close to one are often required to go elsewhere. Warnings about them are posted in hotels. The smell is not just like raw sewage, but abundant, particularly pungent raw sewage on a sweltering, steaming hot day in a poor underdeveloped nation where the local diseases are reflected in the sewage in the worst possible way.
