Wind River Customer goReader Named ''Cool Customer Design'' Portable e-Content Reader Leverages Industry-Leading Embedded Solutions To Deliver Downloadable Electronic Textbooks to Students
ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 31, 2000-- As part of a new, ongoing program designed to recognize outstanding applications of its industry-leading embedded solutions, Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND - news), has named the goReader(TM) e-textbook developed by Chicago-based goReader, Inc., its most recent ``Cool Customer Design.'' Criteria for selection include innovative design, creative use of technology, and value to the industry or as an end-user solution. The goReader device is spotlighted on Wind River's Web site at: windriver.com.
Rich Katzmann, chairman and CEO of goReader, sought help with product development and found that Wind River was the only company that could meet the intense time-to-market demands, while providing superior back-end support and an attractive royalty structure.
``We are committed to improving and enhancing the learning experience for college and university students, yet in order for us to be the first to market, we needed to quickly and easily bring our idea from concept to fully integrated reality,'' said Katzmann. ``goReader chose Wind River's embedded solutions because the value chain they offer -- with proven technology, tools, support, and services -- is unmatched. That made it much easier to focus on our core value-add and get our product out the door quickly, so we could be one up on the competition. We would not hesitate to use Wind River for our future projects.''
``goReader's e-textbook is a great example of how comprehensively Wind River enables the design of digital consumer appliances,'' said Curt Schacker, vice president of marketing for Wind River. ``The easy integration of our RTOS with Intel processors, Sun Java code, and a Sharp display made getting this product to market a snap for goReader.''
The goReader e-textbook runs on Wind River's VxWorks® real-time operating system (RTOS) and its Java(TM)-technology-based Personal JWorks(TM) software, allowing students to download an entire degree's worth of textbooks off the goReader Web site at a fraction of the cost of buying hard-copy books. The device weighs less than five pounds and can hold more than 150 e-textbooks. goReader is the first and only e-book company to offer electronic content on a portable device specifically designed for the higher education market.
