I don't understand the concept of "waste a positive event" in a negative market. A split will cause various short term waves of fluctuation in price, both up and down. The market will set the appropriate price though. And long term the split will not really affect anything. Having said that, it seems that a split is an event which shows managements strong commitment and belief in their business plan AND in the future economic growth opportunity for their company. When better to annouce such committment than when their is rampant fear and uncertainty in the market. At such times it is nice to know that those in charge of the company are confident that it will grow going forward.
