It's intellectual fast food, packaged for anyone and everyone. A little greasy and not very good for you if you eat too much, but it can be part of a balanced diet.

All of the activities you named were active, first-person activities. TV is a mostly passive medium, kinda like watching a campfire. Flicking the remote is like poking the embers. It plugs into that part of the brain which hypnotizes. My mind wanders when I watch TV even with stuff that I find interesting. The IV drip is too slow.

Even enjoying a symphony or a play, or reading a book require SOME participation. If one doesn't expect TV to do anything other than light the room and allow you to watch the "shadows", you're okay.
