Report on Zaffire's presentation at Opticon2000:

Courtesy of NDBFREE's credentials I attended Zaffire's 5:40 PM presentation in the Ballroom yesterday; this is separate and distinct from presentations given at their booth and was attended by a sizable audience.

This mission statement on Zaffire's site gives a good summary of what it was all about:

"Our mission is to fundamentally change the economic formula for metro and regional service providers. Using breakthrough technology designed with a commercial focus, we solve our customers' most pressing optical transport problems and give
them a compelling competitive advantage."

Who are their customers? CLECs and ILECs, those outfits smaller than the RBOCs who are much more nimble and want to provide multiple services to their customers at reasonable cost.

These lower cost factors, coupled with extremely high reliability and QoS, are where Zaffire's Z3000 and its ZOS and management systems come into play.

The equipment is small and is highly scalable; just add more units to the racks as demand requires.

Basically this slideshow was very well done, even to where this non-network, non-tech person understood the implications of what was being said to the audience. Since the presentation was restricted to a tight 20minutes there was no Q & A following but of course that could be done at the Zaffire booth which was crowded and seemingly well attended. More on that in a separate post.

Metro Area or Regional service providers have powerful and relatively low cost systems available from Zaffire that will allow them to expand their service offerings with accurate billing systems and high reliability in addition to expandability as the customer demand increases.

Revenue shipments begin next month.
