Doug,
Re: announcements [that] would decouple AMD from the SOX (to the upside)...

I'm sure that those announcements would cause a bump in the stock price for a while (perhaps a few days), but I feel the price would fall back in-line with a declining SOX within a week.

Even if AMD doesn't announce anything, we still have another test of the power of "good news" on a stock price in this market that just started today:

MOT, something of an undervalued, market laggard, announced that they expect to meet 2001 estimates and held a very upbeat meeting with analysts today. The stock price jumped over 5% to 35 on this ugly day. If the bearishness persists, we can see if MOT can buck the trend. I realize that they aren't a pure semi-play, but rather more of a telecomm stock. I think that the general market pessimism will pull them back down. I could easily be wrong. We shall see.

Regards,
Dave
