hi dave rose,

where do they come from? would i avoid them? they are units that were shipped, developed problems that could not be resolved via tech support, and were returned for replacement machines. i would not avoid them. however, if i could afford new, that's the way i'd go.

the only refurbished puter i'd personally feel good about is a dell from their factory outlet site

dell.com

the reasons are threefold...

1) you get the dell name and quality
2) you get the same as new warranty
3) you get the same as new technical support

please, however , do your own diligence. <g> i note on their site that they are telling people to write for a copy of their warranty. my info regarding 'same as new' warranty comes from their ads.

your mileage may vary. void where prohibited. this offer may only apply for members of si's famous computer learning thread.

:)

Dave, I agree with mr mark on refurbished. But I think not all refurbished Dell computers were returned because of technical problems. Dell has a liberal return policy and it's possible some were returned because the buyer changed her mind. In any case, the warranty is the same as for a new computer. Others, like HP and IBM, also offer refurbished computers, although I'm not sure if their warranty is as for new.

Refurbished ...

A friend once told the story about returning from WW II and getting a job selling 'Refurbished' cars. To refurbish a car, the odometer was turned back and a kid in the back gave it a wash and a vacuum.

Refurbished computers 'probably' have the pirated sofwtare erased and the paw-prints wiped from the screen. A deluxe job would entail removing dried boogers from between the keys.

Get your system from a place with a reputation to protect. A vendor who leases systems could get expired system returns which are in great shape and be motivated to move them at reasonable cost. Again, any warranty depends on the outfit being in business long enough to honour it.

I've had really good luck with used stuff. Often the price is unbeatable. Just be sure you know exactly what you're getting and that nothing critical is missing. A 'no questions' money-back policy for a few days is desirable.

Major manufacturers who offer refurbished machines should be the safest people to deal with.

Cheers, PW.
