con·tro·ver·sy (kntr-vûrs)
n., pl. con·tro·ver·sies.

A dispute, especially a public one, between sides holding opposing views.

You can't refute or dispute an opinion. Only if that opinion is offered as objective truth, a fact.

Interesting case, so you're the only witness? A bit like the tree falling in the forest. In your example, there is a miscarriage of justice. The guilty went free. I believe (subject to new data) that you can get a conviction on single witness crimes. What about means, motive and opportunity and all that? You're getting into an area where my knowledge is admittedly weak.

Relax, Neo, there is always Texas, where a man can be found guilty of murder and sentenced to death on the basis of a single witness's testimony. And where the Governor will refuse to approve a stay of execution.
