It only acts up on a clean install of Win98SE, registry errors, even after a clean install, once the ATA Ultra drivers were loaded, major problems with the registry being damaged, runs fine without the drivers, but you need the drivers to get optimal performance.

Would you go into detail as to what you are referring to.I'm always interested in "optimal" performance no matter how attained.

so maybe what we have come to now with the latest and the greatest box is akin to, say, new browser releases, or software upgrades. we all know and advise one another to hold off awhile on that latest upgrade, and let others work out the bugs. perhaps that applies now to hardware from these boxmakers who are in frantic competition with one another, filling their towers with components from chipmakers and the like who are also in frantic competition with one another. we've all heard the term sweet spot and interpreted it as a 'value-added' condition where one gets the best bang for the buck. perhaps now we should stretch the concept to encompass more than performance-per-dollar-spent... and should be looking at sweet spot as a reliability rating.

tested, tried and true probably no longer correlates with brand new.
